"I am originally from Bigfork, MN. I earned a BFA from Bemidji State University and then went on to do a two year residency with potter Bob Briscoe. Working at Bob's was my first exposure to a professional studio potter make a living from his art. I was convinced instantly that this was what I wanted to do. In 2002 I decided to make a go of it and set up a studio in St. Paul where I continue to work in my 10th year of making pottery professionally. I love making pottery and find it comfortable being part of a tradition of making pots for peoples homes. Pots that can be used daily, and are interesting to the point where they help enhance your day to day life."

"I have always been attracted to natural objects, at least as long as my clothing has had pockets. My carved and sometimes gestural pieces are intimate forms that fit and feel good in the hand. While they are generally not representations of actual objects, they reflect the shapes, patterns, colors and surfaces that I am drawn to in nature. I was introduced to porcelain about 14 years ago and we’ve been inseparable since then. I use a combination of wheel thrown and handbuilt forms that are altered, carved and sprigged. With a variety of airbrushed matte and gloss glazes that enhance the surfaces, the pieces are fired to a high temperature in a gas kiln, cone 10 reduction, around 2340 F. I have many works in process and will be adding them as they come out of the kiln. Each one I've listed is made individually by hand by me."

Later I studied Architecture but did not complete the degree. I have always been creating with hands yet I worked in a non-creative office environment for many many years. I discovered that it is derived from a Celtic word for oak, which happens to be a tree of which I have always felt a magical bond, even from a very young age. I feel that my love of nature is genetic--a nod to my ancestors who would be proud to know that it is alive and well in the 21st century.

While they are generally not representations of actual objects, they reflect the shapes, patterns, colors and surfaces that I am drawn to in nature—the petals of an apple blossom, the grooves of a spindle shell, the pattern of a hosta leaf or the texture of a weathered rock all inform and inspire my work.
I was introduced to porcelain about 11 years ago and we’ve been inseparable since then. I use a combination of wheel thrown and handbuilt forms that are altered, carved and sprigged. With a variety of airbrushed matte and gloss glazes that enhance the surfaces, the pieces are fired in a gas kiln, cone 10 reduction, around 2345 F.

I love all art mediums, but for the last 11 years I've been consumed by the art and craft of clay. I have three cats (Willoughby, Buster & Emmett) that I pamper overmuch, and I'm addicted to flea markets - I love finding treasures. I'm happily married and my husband loves cats and fleamarketing just as much as I do.
I succumbed to what I’ve termed the “Call of the Wheel” in the Spring of 2000 when I discovered the frustrating, yet strangely meditative joy of throwing a pot. Throwing clay soon took a backseat to sculpting clay when I began shaping small forms to add to my thrown pieces. I work with high fire stoneware clay and porcelain and construct my sculptural pieces through a combination of handbuilding techniques. I am equally happy making both whimsical, silly pieces and more sophisticated art pottery.

I don’t know how many people are interested in the technical aspects of clay, but, just in case…I bisque my greenware at cone 05 (almost 1900 degrees) and I do both mid-range oxidation firing (cone 6 – 2232 degrees)in an electric kiln and high fire gas reduction firing (cone 10 – 2380 degrees) for my glazed pieces. All the glazes I use for functional ware are commercial glazes manufactured by Laguna Clay Company and verified foodsafe."

From there I have moved to Gdansk where I have gained Master Degree in Fine Arts and ceramics .Living on the coast of Baltic sea completely changed my way of seeing the objects . During this period I have been obsessed with research of structure and tensions in the material.

"I have worked with porcelain ceramics for thirty years and have not come close to exploring all of the organic themes and inspiration I find in the beauty, mystery and wonder of the natural world.As an independent studio potter, I have exhibited my work and received awards internationally.
Artist Statement
White Earth, a series of porcelain vessels, is a homage to my childhood in the Dakotas, its visual images and memories. It is a deep respect, a bowing down to the earth where I have experienced it.Walking the freshly plowed fields as a child, I would find fossils, shells and arrowheads heads. I have renewed and extended my fascination with these shapes. I have discovered new connections between the prairie (once an inland sea) and the ocean. Like the prairie and the sea, my pieces display hues against large neutral backgrounds - a touch of pink or a glint of pearl - finding a prairie rose in a otherwise green meadow, or a single shell on a stretch of sand. White Earth comes from some part of me that works unconsciously, a part that reaches down into my memories. White Earth comes from that private part of me, and I hope it will touch that part in others.
Technical Information
I work exclusively in porcelain, the queen of all clay bodies. The majority of my work is hand built with some pieces wheel thrown and altered. I make multiple, but never identical, one of a kind pieces.I prefer soft, quiet glazes. Most glazes are a satin matte finish. I mix my own glazes using recipes handed down to me during my apprenticeship, many which originated in Japan, continuing the tradition of teacher passing knowledge to student.All work is fired to a very hard, vitrified 2185 degrees. It is water tight and much more durable than its delicate appearance. Other than the framed pieces, all work can be cleaned with warm soapy water."
