"My work is an accumulation of years of study, experimentation, inspiration and the JOY of working with metal! All of my work is created using traditional metalsmithing techniques, commonly called fabrication. These are the same techniques that metalsmiths have been passing down from generation to generation for hundreds of years. It is a legacy of metalwork and I am very proud to be part of that history. I hope you enjoy viewing what I enjoyed creating! I add new pieces each week, so stop back often! On the personal side, I am a wife (of 19 years) and a mother of two wonderful children, ages 14 and 7. They are the inspiration behind my Mother's line of jewelry and a source of joy and inspiration every day of my life. Everything I do, I do for my family and each piece of jewelry I make, I make as if it were for my own family...so you get the very best from me each time you order from me! I live in the woods in Ohio, and I grew up in the woods of Pennsylvania, so a lot of what you see in my shop is nature-inspired as well! I learned about perennial gardening from my mother at an early age and my love of all things green and growing finds its' way into my work constantly! "I have always been driven to create art in some form, drawing and painting, an art handed down from my mom. When I discovered jewelry design I really found my niche. I create my jewelry as a piece of wearable art. Each piece is a careful blending of color and form, balancing both for an original work. Jewelry design has given me an outlet for both my creativity and the love I have always had for rocks, stones, gems, of all shapes and sizes. While I work mainly with silver and stone, some pieces use resin, copper, brass or 14k gold. My inspiration is found in those things at their natural state, in the texture, and color of the organic. The feel, weight, temperature, shape, and color of the stone itself often will inspire the end result. Many of the stones are found on my local beach while walking my dogs, I bring the stones home and polish them. I am a self taught silversmith and all of the silver is hand forged. Just as nothing in nature is ever exactly the same, no two pieces of my jewelry are exactly the same. While some I do try to duplicate as much as possible, most of my pieces are one of a kind. "As a jewelry designer I carefully work a happy collaboration of the styles I cherish. I design pieces in a contrast of both elements and structure: organic and vintage, airy and funky, modern and natural. Creating jewelry with a unique self-expression is a joy to me. About the artist:I just couldn't take it anymore, sitting at a desk, shoulders aching from a bottom-rung job I despised yet felt I needed to do. Surely helping the needy and their children is a noble cause. So why was I so exhausted, depressed, bitter and unproductive? I became the worst version of myself, snapping at my lovely husband, withdrawing from friends and family, complaining, spiteful toward God. I would read the "Quit Your Day Job" Etsy bulletins and cringe with guilt and envy, self doubt even. I began to wonder what I was doing with my life, questioning the choices I made everyday that made me such a different person than I used to be. I couldn't have survived the changes I needed to make without the love of Jesus, so patient and encouraging, strong and sweet. Nor Aaron, my husband, the love of my life and best friend. With new ideas budding all around me, I took the plunge from non-profit work to stay-at-home, entrepreneurial, creative work with nothing more than a business plan, some set-aside money, and a random collection of jewelry tools and bits of knowledge. lumafina was born, my own creative company, but not by my merit. Without the source of strength in God, I don't know how I'd do it, day in and out. Please, please tell me you are finding strength outside yourself, that you are not doing this alone. Surround yourself in the loving Spirit of Jesus, with friends who give you life, with professionals who challenge and inspire you, with your family who loves and needs you. "I will start by saying how thrilled and honored I am to be named a finalist in the prestigious Saul Bell Design Award competition for 2011, sponsored by Rio Grande. I have been designing fine silver jewelry using metal clay for several years and I just love it! Metal clay is a fantastic medium which, after firing in a kiln, is .999% silver or 22karat gold. The silver is made from partially recycled silver! My background in fine art painting and designing polymer clay jewelry made my transition to metal clay a natural. I am inspired by the natural world, sea life, organic flowing abstract forms and even architectural structures in my "Castles and Huts" ring series. I also teach classes to students around the San Francisco Bay Area. I am a Certified PMC Artisan, Level 2 and am currently working toward the Metal Clay Masters Registry professional development program. Coming full circle, recently, I have been "painting" on the silver by adding vitreous enamel to the fired silver for a splash of color which really pops on the silver!
